The numerator of a rational number is 3 less than the denominator. If the denominator is increased by 5 and the numerator by 2, we get the rational number 12. Find the rational number.

Let denominator of the given rational number = x

Then numerator = x - 3

Rational number =x3x

Acording to the condition :

x3+2x+5=12x1x+5=12

By cross multiplication

2(x1)=x+52x2=x+5

2xx=5+2x=7

Rational number =x3x=737=47
