Nutrients:

  1. Substances required for the growth and development of organisms are known as nutrients.
  2. Out of all the available nutrients, seventeen of them are essential nutrients without which plants cannot survive.
  3. Plants obtain nutrients from these three sources namely water, soil, and air.
  4. On the basis of the requirements of plants, the nutrients are categorized into two categories namely
    • Macronutrients: The nutrients that are required in large quantities by plants. For example, carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, etc.
    • Micronutrients: The nutrients that are required in smaller quantities by the plants but whose deficiency can cause diseases in plants. For example, iron, zinc, copper, nickel, etc.
