Question

The octahedral complex CoSO4Cl.5NH3 exists in two isomeric forms X and Y. Isomer X reacts with AgNO3 to give a white precipitate, but does not react with BaCl2. Isomer Y gives white precipitate with BaCl2 but does not react with AgNO3. Isomer X and Y are

Solution

The correct option is A ionisation isomers
Since X isomers reacts with AgNO3 to give white ppt. so the X must be [Co(NH3)5SO4]Cl
[Co(NH3)5SO4]ClAgNO3−−−AgCl
(X) (white ppt)
Simillarly since Y reacts with BaCl2 to give white ppt and at the same time it also does not react with AgNO3, so the white white ppt. must be for BaSO4 and hence Y will be [Co(NH3)5Cl]SO4.
[Co(NH3)5Cl]SO4BaCl2−−BaSO4 (Y) (white ppt)
[X] and [Y] are ionisation isomers.
