Question

The odometer of a car reads 2000 km at the start of a trip. And at the end it reads 2400 km. If the trip took 8 hours, find the average velocity in km/hour and m/second.

Open in App
Solution

Step 1, Given data

Initial reading = 2000 km

Final reading = 2400 km

Total time taken = 8 hours

Step 2, Finding the average speed

We can say,

Total distance traveled = Final reading - Initial reading

Or, Total distance traveled = 2400 - 2000 = 400 km

We know,

Averagespeed=Totaldistance/Totaltime

Putting all the values

Averagespeed=400/8=50 km/h

Hence the average speed is 50 km/h

In m/s it is written as 50×5/18=13.88 m/s
