The human ear responds to such sounds for which the number of vibrations per second lies within a certain limit, called the limit of audibility.
The range of hearing (audible range) for the normal human ear is 20 to 20000 vibrations per second, i.e., those vibrations whose frequency lies between 20 Hz to 20000 Hz.
The sound having frequencies above 20000 Hz and below 20 Hz cannot be heard by normal human ear. But these frequency limits vary from individual to individual. For example, the ears of older people are less sensitive to higher frequencies.
The older a person becomes, the shorter is the range of frequency. The upper limit of frequency is generally much higher in children than old ones.
