Millions of oogonia are formed prior to the birth of the human females.

Some of the oogonia differentiate and form into the primary oocyte. Primary oocyte undergoes meiosis I, however it gets temporarily arrested at prophase I of meiosis I till puberty.

After the attainment of puberty, the primary oocyte completes its first meiotic division resulting in the formation of a large haploid secondary oocyte and a tiny first polar body.
