When electric field near a pointed conductor is very high, air molecules near the conductor gets ionised. The free electrons resulting from the ionisation of air molecules are accelerated and these accelerated electrons cause more ionisation of air molecules. When recombination of free electrons and ionised air molecules takes place, we observe a glow which is known as Corona Discharge.
