The leukotrienes are called as the inflammatory molecules which are also called as the local hormones. These are the molecules which are released by the cells like macrophages, mast cells and other immune cells in response to the pathogenic antigen. These molecules are released during the allergic reactions. When there is an overproduction of the leukotrienes, this may result in allergic reactions like asthma. Due to more amount of the leukotrienes, there is mucus secretion which blocks the tracheal and the nasal cavities resulting in shortness of breath in asthma.
