Now, area of the trapezium is $= \frac{1}{2} \times (9 + 7) \times$ the perpendicular distance between the parallel sides.

According to the problem,

$\frac{1}{2} \times (9 + 7) \times$ the perpendicular distance between the parallel sides $= 48$

or, The distance between the parallel sides $= \frac{48}{8} = 6$ .

So the distance between the parallel sides $= 6$ cm.
