The perimeter of a right triangle is 24 centimeters. Three times the length of the longer leg minus two times the length of the shorter leg exceeds the hypotenuse by 2 centimeters. What are the lengths of all three sides?
8, 6, 10
Let the shorter leg be 2x.
The longer leg be x2−1
And the hypotenuse be x2+1
According to given condition.
x2+1+x2−1+2x=24⇒2x2+2x=24⇒x2+x−12=0....(i)
Also,
3(x2−1)−2(2x)=x2+1+2⇒3x2−3−4x=x2+3⇒2x2−4x−6=0⇒x2−2x−3=0.....(ii)
Subtracting (ii) from (i), we have
x2+x−12−x2+2x+3=0⇒3x=9⇒x=3
∴ the shorter leg = 2×3=6cm
The longer leg =(3)2−1=8cm
And the hypotenuse =(3)2+1=10cm
