Given, perimeter of the square plot = 20 m
Perimeter of a square = 4 $\times$ side length
$\Rightarrow$ Side of a square = $\frac{\text{perimeter}}{4}$

$\therefore$Side length of the given square plot = $\frac{20}{4}$ = 5 m

Since the cow is standing at the middle of the plot, in order to come out, it has to walk a length which is half the side length of the square plot.

$\therefore$ Distance the cow has to walk = $\frac{5}{2}$ = 2.5 cm
