The nervous system in humans consists of the central nervous system (CNS) and the peripheral nervous system (PNS). CNS consists of the brain and the spinal cord while the PNS includes the nerves and ganglia outside of the brain and spinal cord. This system is divided into somatic and autonomic nervous systems. The somatic nervous system consists of the cranial and spinal nerves. There are 12 pairs of cranial nerves in the brain connecting head and upper body, while 31 pairs of spinal nerves connecting the rest of the body.
