  • In 1774, Joseph Priestly, an English chemist, discovered it and published his findings in the same year, before Scheele did.
  • In 1775, Antoine Lavoisier, a French chemist, discovered that this new gas supported combustion and formed about one-fifth of the volume of air. He gave it the name oxygen.
