Solution

1. pH

pH stands for the potential of hydrogen. The pH scale ranges from 0 to 14 and based on this pH value solutions are differetiated.

  1. Substances having pH between 0 to 6 are acids.
  2. Substances having pH values between 8 to 14 are bases.
  3. Neutral solutions have a pH value of 7.

2. Explanation for pH values

(i) The pH value of an alkaline solution is more significant than seven because bases have a pH ranging from 8 to 14. Thus, the pH value of an alkaline solution is greater than 7.

(ii) On the other hand, the pH value is fixed from 0 to 6 for an acidic solution. Thus, the pH value of an acidic solution is less than 7.
