The phenomenon is dispersion. White light is a polychromatic light made up of seven bands of colors each having different wavelengths. Upon passing through a prism, each of the colors travels at different speeds and hence has different angles of refraction leading to the splitting of the light i.e. dispersion. It first splits into seven colors on the first surface and then split further at the second surface of prism to give well-spaced seven bands.
