Question

The piston in the cylinder head of a locomotive has a stroke (twice the amplitude) of 1.0 m. If the piston moves with simple harmonic motion with an angular frequency of 200 rad/min, what is its maximum speed ?

Open in App
Solution

It is given that the stroke of the piston is twice the amplitude, the stroke is 10m and the angular frequency, ω=200rad/min.

The amplitude is given as,

A= 1 2 m

From the formula of maximum speed,

υ max =ωA

Substitute the values.

υ max =200× 1 2 =100m/min

Hence, the value of maximum speed of block is 100m/min.
