The plant body of angiosperms including the flowers is represented as the diploid sporophyte. The life cycle of all land plants and some algae follows what is termed as alternation of generations, with one generation having haploid organisms called gametophytes and the other having diploid organisms called a sporophyte. In all land plants angiosperms represent the extreme end of a trend in the evolution of plants where the sporophytic generation becomes larger and more independent of the gametophyte while the gametophyte becomes smaller and way more dependent on the sporophyte.
