The plant kingdom is divided into cryptogamae and phanerogams. Then the cryptogramae are divided into thallophytes and bryophyta. Shouldn't we call cryptogams as phylum and thallophytes as classes? Please elaborate.

The definition of a division in plants is based on similar characteristics. Similarly, cyptogamae and phanerogams is too general of a classification, and is not employed, but rather the divisions are as thallophytes, bryophytes, pteridophytes, angiosperms and gymnosperms.
