Solution

Given |z + 1| < |z – 1|

Let z = x + iy where x, y ∈R

i.e x+iy+1<x+iy-1x+1+iy<x-1+iy

Squaring both sides, we get

x+1+iy2<x-1+iy2i.e x+12+y2<x-12+y2i.e x2+1+2x+y2<x2+1-2x+y2i.e 2x<0i.e x<0

Hence, |z + 1| < |z – 1| lies on left side of y-axis
