An undesirable substance present in the environment is responsible for pollution of the atmosphere, land, water, etc.

Pollutants are of two types:

  1. Biodegradable pollutants- Those pollutants that can be broken down into simple, non-poisonous, harmless products over time by microorganisms known as decomposers are called biodegradable pollutants. Examples of biodegradable materials are sewage, dead animals and plants, etc.
  2. Non- biodegradable pollutants- Those pollutants that cannot be broken down into simple, non-poisonous, harmless products over time by microorganisms known as decomposers are called non-biodegradable pollutants. Examples of non-biodegradable materials are plastic, rubber, metals, and other materials.
