The potential energy of an object of mass m moving in xy plane in a conservative field is given by u=ax+by, where x and y are position coordinates of the object. Find magnitude of its acceleration.

Fx=dUdx=a

Fy=dUdy=b

max=a

ax=am

and
may=b
ay=bm

Net acceleration , a=a2x+a2y=(am)2+(bm)2

Hence a=a2+b2m
