Question

The potential energy of raindrops _____ when they fall down.

Open in App
Solution

  1. By conservation of energy we know, that energy can neither be created nor be destroyed but it can be converted from one form of energy into another.
  2. Raindrops falling from the clouds possess kinetic energy solely due to the existence of acceleration due to gravity.
  3. As the distance between raindrops and the earth's surface decreases, its velocity increases, and thus kinetic energy increases.
  4. The Kinetic energy, as well as the velocity of the raindrops, will be maximum just before hitting the ground.

Hence, the potential energy of raindrops decreases when they fall down.
