The pre-historic man who gave a proper burial to the dead for the first time was the Neanderthal man, who existed about 100,000 – 40,000 years ago. They had a cranial capacity of 1500 cc. These species exhibited a reasonably good degree of social behaviour and culture. They are even believed to have co-existed with Homo sapiens for many years, until the latter completely took over about 40,000 years ago.
