DNA replication involves formation of two strands - leading and lagging strands. This is due to the antiparallel structure of the DNA wherein one strand runs 5' to 3', and the other, 3' to 5'. Since DNA polymerase works from 5' to 3' direction only, only one of the strands can be synthesised continuously, while the other strand becomes the lagging strand; synthesis of this strand takes places by the formation of Okazaki fragments, which are later joined up to form a complete strand. Since one strand or one half of the daughter DNA molecule is synthesised in this manner, DNA replication is said to be a semidiscontinuous process.
