Question

The pressure exerted by 12 g of an ideal gas at temperature tC in a vessel of V litre is one atmosphere. When the temperature is increased by 10C at the same volume, the pressure increases by 10%. Calculate the temperature t and volume V.
(Molecular mass of the gas =120).

Solution

As the volume is constant, pressure law can be applied, that is :

P1P2=T1T2

11.1=t+273t+283

t=173C=100 K

Now, applying gas equation,

PV=nRT

or V=nPRT=12×0.082×100120×1=0.82 litre
