Solution

Let P and W denote the price and weight of the diamond, respectively. Thus, we have:P α W2 P=kW2 k is constant.4000=k ×102 P= Rs 4000 and W= 10 decigrams k=40The diamond is divided into two pieces, so we will calculate the price of diamond for both the cases separately.Let the price of the diamond weighing 7 decigrams be P1 and the price of the diamond weighing 3 decigrams be P2. P1=40 ×72 P1=Rs 1960 P2=40×32 P2=Rs 360 P1+ P2=Rs 1960+360 = Rs 2320Price of the diamond before it was broken into two pieces, P=Rs 4000Price of the diamond after it was broken into two pieces, P=Rs 2320Total loss = Rs 4000-2320= Rs 1680
