Open in App
Solution

Cellular respiration

  1. Every cell in our body needs oxygen to function.
  2. We get the oxygen, our cells need from the air we breathe.
  3. Our body cells use the oxygen we breathe to get energy from the food we eat.
  4. This process is called cellular respiration.
  5. During cellular respiration, the cell uses oxygen to break down sugar. Breaking down sugar produces the energy our body needs.
  6. This is very similar to wood burning in a fire.
  7. As the wood burns, it combines with oxygen and releases heat energy and carbon dioxide.
  8. When the cell uses oxygen to break down sugar, oxygen is used, carbon dioxide is produced, and energy is released.
