Solution

Evaporation:

  • It is a surface phenomenon.
  • In liquids, a small fraction of particles at the surface, having higher kinetic energy, can escape from the forces of attraction of other particles and gets converted into a vapour state.
  • In other words, the process by which an element or compound transitions from its liquid state to its gaseous state below the temperature at which it boils.
  • They gain energy which is equal to the latent heat of vaporization on its surface, therefore the conversion of a liquid into vapours at any temperature below its boiling point is called evaporation.
  • A particular example is a process by which liquid water enters the atmosphere as water vapour in the water cycle.

Thus, the process of a liquid changing to its vapour at any temperature below its boiling point is called evaporation.
