Apomixis refers to substitution of the usual sexual reproduction by a form of asexual reproduction which does not involve meiosis and syngamy. In gametophytic apomixis, an unreduced embryo sac develops from the megaspore mother cell by circumvention of meiosis (Diplospory) or directly from a cell in the nucellus (Apospory). In apospory megaspore mother cell is not differentiated and diploid somatic cell acts as a spore. The embryo is formed by the unfertilized egg (parthenogenesis) or some other cell of the embryo sac.
