Question

The product of pressure and volume of an enclosed dry gas at an given temperature is always a constant quantity. Explain it.

Solution

Step-1- Explain Boyle’s law

According to Boyle's law, temperature remaining constant, volume of a fixed mass of a dry gas is inversely proportional to the pressure exerted on it.

Step-2 Write mathematical expression

Mathematically,

V ∝1p(T is kept constant)

where, V is the volume of a certain mass of a gas at pressure p and temperature T.

V=kp

(where k is a constant of proportionality)

Step-3 Final result

PV = k

Thus, the product of pressure and volume of an enclosed dry gas at a given temperature is always a constant quantity.
