Some of the general properties of bases are as follows :-
They are bitter to taste, turn red litmus paper to blue, release hydroxyl group in the solution medium.
The hydroxide ion released by the base is the negative/anionic part of the base.
Since, alkalis are water soluble bases, they have the same properties as that of the bases.
Thus when an alkali dissociates, there is formation of a cation and an anion (negative ion) which is the hydroxide ion itself.
Since, hydroxide ion which is negative in nature is responsible for the properties of alkalis, therefore, the correct answer is option (D).
