The reason that ammonium chloride is water-soluble while sand is not is also correct but it is not the correct explanation of the given assetion.

Ammonium chloride is sublime. It will undergo sublimation i.e, directly convert into vapor from solid without entering into a liquid stage. As soon as ammonium chloride is sublime, sand will be left behind, thus separating ammonium chloride and sand.
