Question

The radius of a well is 7 m. water init is at a depth of 20m and depth of water column is 10 m.work done in pumping out water completely from the well is,(g=10m/s2)?

Solution

Radius of the well 'r'= 7m.

Depth of the bottom of the well= 20m

Depth of the water level from top of the well= 10m

Height of the water column in the well 'h'= 20m - 10m= 10m

Volume of the water in the cylinderical well= π r² h= π×7²× 10= 1538.6 litre.

Density of water= 1 kg/litre

Mass of water in the well= volume in litre× density = 1538.6litre× 1 kg/litre= 1538.6kg

The water is to be lifted from varying height from the well ie the bottom of the well at 20 m depth to 10m the top of water level in the well.

The average height from which the water is lifted = (20+10/2)= 25m

Work done in lifting 1 kg of water through 25m against the acceleration due to gravity= force× distance=(1 kg× 10 m/s²)× 25 m= 10N×25m=250Joule.

Total work required to be done in lifting 1538.6 kg of water through 25m = 250 J/kg× 1538.6 kg= 384,650 J.
