Solution

The correct option is A

64km

Step 1: Calculating the acceleration due to gravity if decreased by 1%

The acceleration due to gravity on Earth's surface is g.

Let the decreased acceleration be g'.

According to the question,

g'=g-1%ofgg'=g-1100gg'=100g-1g100g'=99100g

Step 2: Calculating the depth below the earth's surface where the acceleration due to gravity decreases by 1%

The acceleration is due to gravity at depth hbelow the earth's surface g'=g1-hr

where r is the radius of earth.

Substituting the value of g' from Step 1, we get,

99100g=g1-hr99100=1-hrhr=1-99100hr=100-99100hr=1100

The value of r is given 6400km in the question.

h=6400100kmh=64km

So, at a depth of 64kmbelow the earth's surface, the acceleration due to gravity decreases by 1%.

Hence, option A is correct.
