Question

The radius of the earth is about 6400km and that of Mars is about 3200km. The mass of Earth is about ten times the mass of Mars. If an object weighs 200N on earth, then what would be is weight on Mars? (G=10m/s2)

Solution

Given:
Weight of object on Mars = 200N
Radius of Earth = 6400 km
Radius of Mars = 3200 km
Mass of Earth (Me) = 10 x Mass of Mars (Mm)
⇒Me/Mm = 10
We Know That g α m/R²
⇒ge/gm = (Me/Mm)(Rm/Re)²
⇒ge/gm=10 x (3200/6400)²
⇒ge/gm = 10/4
⇒ gm = (2/5) ge
Weight of object on Earth = M x ge = 200 N
Weight of object of Mars = M x gm
⇒ M[(2/5)ge]
⇒ Mge x (2/5)
= (200 x 2)/5 = 80 N
∴Weight Of Object on Mars = 80N
