Question

The rate of biomass production in an ecosystem is called productivity. They are of two types, gross primary productivity and net primary productivity. How these two productivities are related?

Solution

The rate of production of total biomass is called as productivity. Gross primary productivity is the rate of production of organic matter by photosynthesis and net primary productivity is the total available biomass for consumption for heterotroph. Thus, the productivity is the sum total of gross primary productivity and net primary productivity.
