Question

The rate of decomposition of detritus is affected by the abiotic factors like availability of oxygen, pH of the soil substratum, temperature etc. Discuss

Solution

Introduction:

Decomposition is the process of breaking complex organic matter into simpler compounds like minerals. Factors which affect decomposition are:

● Temperature

● Moisture

● pH

● Composition

● Aerobic condition

Temperature:

Decomposition needs a temperature of 25C or slightly more. Low temperature decreases the rate of decomposition.

Moisture:

Presence of moisture provides suitable condition for decomposition. However, excess moisture hampers the process.

pH:

The pH of substratum affects the composition of microbes (acidophilus/basophils) which degrade the dead organic matter.

Composition:

Decomposition depends upon the composition of the detritus.
Lignin and cellulose are decomposed slowly as compared to water soluble substances.

Aerobic condition:

In the absence of oxygen anaerobiosis sets in and there will be incomplete degradation. Oxygen presence favors decomposition.
