Question

The ratio between the length and the breadth of a rectangle field is 3 : 2. If only the length is increased by 5 metres , the new area of field will be 2600 sq. metres . What is the breadth of the rectangle field?

Solution

Let length = 3x
Breadth = 2x

Initial Area = 3x*2x = 6x²

If length is increased By 5 m new length = 3x+5
New Area = 2600 m²
=> 2600 = (3x+5)2x
=>2600 = 6x² + 10x

=> 6x² +10x - 2600 = 0

Solving the Quad equation We get x = 20 or -21.6

Since length and breadth cannot be negative we take x = 20

Therefore Breadth = 3x = 60 m
