Question

The ratio between the radius of the base and height of a cylinder is 2:3. If its volume is 1617 cm3, find the total surface area of the cylinder.

Solution

Ratio in radius and height of the cylinder = 2:3

Let radius (r) = 2x

Then height (h) =- 3x

Volume = πr2 h

227×(2x)2× 3x = 1617

227×4x2× 3x = 1617

2647x3=1617x3=1617×7264

x3=49×78=(72)3 x=72cm

r=2x=2×72=7 cm

and h=3x =3 ×72=212 cm

Now total surface area = 2π r(h+r)

=2×227×7(212+7)=44(21+142)cm2

= 44×352cm2=770cm2
