let there present ages be $4 x, 5 x$

therefore after 8 years there ages will be $4 x + 8, 5 x + 8$

given $4 x + 8 : 5 x + 8 = 5 : 6$

$\Rightarrow 6 (4 x + 8) = 5 (5 x + 8)$

therefore $x = 8$

so there present ages are $32, 40$
