The ratio of the sums of m and n terms of an A.P. is m2:n2, then the ratio of the mth and nth terms is

Open in App
Solution

Sum of m terms of an A.P.=m2[2a+(m1)d]
Sum of n terms of an A.P.=n2[2a+(n1)d]

m2[2a+(m1)d]n2[2a+(n1)d]=m:n

[2a+mdd][2a+ndd]=mn

2an+mndnd=2am+mndmd
2an2am=ndmd
2a(nm)=d(nm)
2a=d

Ratio of mth term to nth term:
[a+(m1)d][a+(n1)d]

=[a+(m1)2a][a+(n1)2a]

=a[1+2m2]a[1+2n2]

=(2m1)(2n1)

So, the ratio of mth term and the nth term of the arithmetic series is
=(2m1):(2n1)

Hence, this is the answer.
