Question

The reaction 2NO(g)+Cl2(g)2NOCl(g) is second order in NO and first order in Cl2. In a volume of 2 dm3.5 mole of nitric oxide and 2 mol of Cl2 were brought together, and the initial rate was 2.4×103mole dm3s1. What will be the rate when half of the chlorine has reacted?

Solution

2NO+Cl22NOCl
dRdt=K[NO]2[Cl2]
at t=0 initially
[NO]=52=2.5moldm3
[Cl2]=22=1moldm3
dRdt=k(2.5)2(1)=6.25k
when flay of Cl2 reacted then
[Cl2]=212=0.5moldm3
[NO]=512=2moldm3
dRdt=K(2)2×0.5
=2K
