Question

The reaction between iron and copper sulphate solution is a chemical…………. reaction.

Solution

A chemical reaction in which a more reactive element displaces a less reactive element from its compound is called a displacement reaction.

General form is:

AB + C → AC + B.

Example:

Fe + CuSO4 → FeSO4 + Cu

In this iron(Fe) lies above copper (Cu) in the reactivity series. Hence, it will displace copper from copper sulphate and itself get displaced to iron sulphate.
