Solution

The correct option is C 2.7406
Let, f(x)=x log10x1.2
So that, f(1)=ve,
f(2)=ve,
and f(3)=+ve,
the root lies between 2 and 3

Taking x0=2
and x1=3,
f(x0)=0.59794
and f(x1)=0.23236

Using method of false position,

x2=x0x1x0f(x1)f(x0)f(x0)=2.7210 ...(i)

f(x2)=f(2.7210)=0.0171
i.e. the root lies between 2.7210 and 3
Taking x0=2.7210
x1=3
f(x0)=0.0171
and f(x1)=0.2313 in equation (i), we get

x3=2.720+0.2790.2313+0.0171×0.0171=2.74020

Representing this process, successive approximations are
x4=2.74024
and x5=2.7406

root is 2.7406, correct to 4 decimal places.
