Nana Saheb was the adopted son of the Maratha Peshwa Baji Rao II. The Company refused to recognise him as a legitimate heir. Angered by this, he decided to participate in the rebellion and soon became a prominent leader. He attacked the British camp in Kanpur along with his deputy, Tatya Tope. However, Kanpur was soon recaptured by the British owing to the large numbers of the Company's troops.
