Question

The refractive indexes of glass and water with respect to air are 3/2 and 4/3 respectively. If speed of light is 2 x 10^8 m/s, find the speed of light in water.

Solution

Given that Refractive index of glass = 3/2 refractive index of water = 4/3. Speed of light in glass = 2*10^8 m/s Therefore, the speed of light in vacuum = refractive index of glass * speed of light in glass speed in vacuum = (3/2)(2*10^8) = 3*10^8 m/s in the same way, speed of light in vacuum = refractive index of water * speed of light in water 3*10^8 = (4/3) * speed of light in water speed of light in water = 3*3*10^8 / 4 speed of light in water = 9*10^8 / 4 speed of light in water = 2.25*10^8 m/s. I hope it is clear to you
