Question

The refractive indices of three media A, B, and C are 2.55, 1.75, and 2.15, which medium has (a) the highest optical density and (b) the lowest optical density?

Solution

Optical Density -

  1. Optical density is the process of transmission of light or other electromagnetic radiation by matter.
  2. The process of emission and absorption depends on the wavelength of the radiations, which includes the interaction between fundamental particles like electrons, atoms, ions, etc.
  3. When a beam of light interacts with absorbing atoms, absorption takes place. It depends on the sample’s thickness and the concentration of the absorbing atoms.

Hence,

(a) - The highest optical density is for media ‘A’ i.e. - 2.55

(b) - The lowest optical density is for media ‘B’ i.e. - 1.75
