Question

The relative densities of two substances X and Y are 2.5 and 0.9 respectively. Find the densities of X and Y. Find whether the substance will sink or float?

Solution

Step 1: Given data,

Relative density of X is ρx=2.5

Relative density of Y is ρy=0.9

Step 2: Calculate the density,

Relative Density: The ratio of a substance's density (mass per unit volume) to the density of water is known as relative density or specific gravity.

As the density of water is ρw=1000Kg/m3

Thus, RelativedensityofX=DensityofXDensityofwater

DensityofX=RelativedensityofX×Densityofwater

DensityofX=2.5×1000=2500kg/m3

Similarly,

DensityofY=RelativedensityofY×DensityofwaterDensityofY=0.9×1000=900kg/m3

Thus, the density of substances X and Y is 2500kg/m3 and 900kg/m3

As the density of X is greater than the density of water (1000kg/m3) thus, the substance X will sink in the water.

As the density of Yis less than the density of water, thus, the substance Y will float in the water.
