The Chipko movement was started in the Garhwal village of Reni.
Chipko Andolan was called to protect the trees by hugging them and not permitting the cutting of those trees.
The Chipko movement spread rapidly through communities and the media and forced the government to reconsider its objectives in the name of forest development, to whom the forest belongs.
It has contributed to the effective management of forests because of the involvement of local citizens.
