Respiratory Quotient or RQ is calculated by the amount of CO2 eliminated to the O2 consumed. It is a dimensionless number used in calculations of Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR).
i.e RQ=CO2 eliminatedO2 consumed
Hence, RQ for glucose or carbohydrate is 1.0 and for fat is 0.7, for protein it is 0.5 and for organic acids it is more than one.
